Enter design conditions

Enter chilled water flow and temperatures. The coil outlet, supply conditions and delivered TR update as you change them.

Two different recovery devices

The wheel exchanges energy with extract air. The horseshoe heat pipe transfers heat across the cooling coil within the same supply airstream.

In air-target mode the CHW temperatures define a design ΔT for required flow. In water-flow mode the entered CHW temperatures and flow define available capacity. The model uses a simplified coil approach. Real coil duty and water outlet depend on selection and control; verify with measured values and a manufacturer schedule.

Start at the outdoor intake

Follow the green particles through the machine. Select a part to see what it does and what to check on site.

Spin the recovery wheel

Two separate streams pass opposite sides of a rotating wheel. It can transfer sensible heat; an enthalpy wheel can also exchange moisture. Performance and leakage depend on its design.

*Simple sensible-only illustration: entering temperature moves toward extract temperature by selected effectiveness. Actual value requires manufacturer selection.

Watch for

Wheel rotation, belt/motor, seals, purge arrangement, air pressure relationship and clean sections. Check whether heat recovery is actually specified for this FAHU.

Where does water come from?

Make it rain

At 101.3 kPa; assumes saturated air at the coil exit whenever coil leaving dry bulb is below outdoor dew point. This shortcut ignores bypass factor, actual apparatus dew point and changing air density. Use selected coil data for design.

Control idea

Temperature and humidity sensors report conditions. The controller compares them with approved setpoints, drives valve/fan/damper outputs, then verifies feedback and alarms.

This is a teaching sequence. Fire response, low temperature protection, fail positions and setpoints must follow the project cause-and-effect and selected controls.

Site walk: uncover the hidden checks

Select each zone to reveal one physical verification. Tick it when the trainee can explain the evidence to collect.

Fault detective

Pick a symptom, choose the next best check, then reveal the measurement route.

Five-minute graduate check

Answer from the pictures and experiments. Each answer gives immediate feedback.

Fresh Air Handling Unit Explained: Interactive FAHU Lab

Explore how a fresh air handling unit works, including filters, heat recovery, cooling coils, humidity and controls, through an interactive FAHU lab.

Topics you can explore

  • FAHU working principle
  • Heat recovery wheel
  • FAHU cooling and humidity

Practical engineering example

Trace outdoor air through filtration, recovery and the cooling coil. Change temperature or airflow and observe the response at the labelled points before considering the control sequence.
