Cooling Load & Duct Static Pressure Lab

The two calculations every junior HVAC designer is asked for first: how much cooling does this room need, and how much pressure must the fan make to deliver it. Build the load piece by piece, watch it change through the day, then size the ductwork and add up the index run.

Design conditions

Every load calculation starts with outdoor and indoor design conditions. Pick a city preset (typical values) or enter your project's design basis.

Location preset

Presets are typical summer design values for learning. Use the values in your project design basis or the authority's requirements.

Supply air and psychrometrics

The sensible load sets the supply airflow. The latent load and the outdoor air set how much moisture the coil must remove.

Working

Duct sizing by equal friction

An AHU serves several rooms like this one through a trunk with three tees and six diffusers. Set the friction rate and velocity limits; each section is sized automatically.

About this lab: Cooling Load & Duct Static Pressure Lab

Cooling Load and Duct Static Pressure for HVAC Designers

This free lab teaches the core HVAC design calculations with every step shown: heat gains, the hourly peak, supply airflow, duct sizing by equal friction, and the external static pressure for fan selection.

What the lab covers

  • Conduction through walls, roof and glass with simplified sol-air and time lag
  • Solar gain through glazing using SHGC and orientation
  • Internal gains from people, lighting and equipment
  • Outdoor air sensible and latent loads from psychrometrics
  • Duct friction by Darcy-Weisbach and Colebrook, fittings by velocity pressure
  • Index run, AHU internal losses, fan power and specific fan power

What makes up a room cooling load?

Heat conducted through walls, roof and glass, solar radiation through glass, heat from people (sensible and latent), lighting and equipment, and the outdoor air brought in for ventilation. The peak usually happens in the afternoon for west-facing rooms and in the morning for east-facing rooms.

How do you get supply airflow from the cooling load?

Divide the room sensible load by 1.23 × (room temperature − supply air temperature). For a 10 kW sensible load with 24 °C room and 13 °C supply, the airflow is about 10,000 ÷ (1.23 × 11) ≈ 740 L/s.

What is the equal friction method?

Each duct section is sized so that its friction loss per metre is about the same (often around 0.8 to 1 Pa/m), within velocity limits for noise. It is simple and widely used for low velocity supply systems.

What is the index run?

The path from the fan to the terminal with the highest total pressure loss. The fan must overcome it, so the external static pressure is based on the index run plus the return side.
