Method Statement & ITP Review Lab

A method statement says how the work will be done safely and correctly. The ITP says who checks what, and when. Learn to review both like a consultant: find the errors that matter, set the right hold points, and understand what each one costs the programme.

Method statements and ITPs explained

Both are submitted to the consultant and approved before the work starts. The method statement is for the crew. The ITP is for the inspectors.

    Method statement review

Choose a method statement. Read it as the consultant's reviewer and click every paragraph that contains an error or a dangerous gap. Then submit your review to see what you found, what you missed and what you flagged wrongly.

    Your review

    ITP builder

Load a template for a system, then set the intervention for each party. Click a cell to cycle H → W → R → S → -. The checker flags critical steps without a consultant hold or witness, and ITPs with so many hold points that the job will crawl.

    4D hold point simulator

Your ITP drives a simple programme. Each activity takes the days shown. At a hold point the crew waits for the notice period and the next inspection day. At a witness point they give notice but keep working. Change the settings and compare with "every step a hold point".

    Day 0
Rejections are applied to hold and witness points in a fixed pattern so the result is repeatable: each rejected inspection costs one day of rework plus a second inspection.

    3D concealment gate

A drywall partition from framing to finish. Move through the stages. The hold point is before the boards go on. Turn on x-ray to see what an inspector would have caught, and what is hidden forever if the wall is closed without one.

About this lab: Method Statement & ITP Review Lab

Method Statement and ITP Review for MEP Engineers

This free lab trains site and QA/QC engineers to review MEP method statements and to prepare inspection and test plans. It uses sample documents with realistic errors and a live ITP builder.

    What the lab covers

    • The content of a good method statement and the common errors reviewers find
    • Test values that often go wrong: insulation resistance test voltage, pressure test values and gauge ranges
    • Hold, witness, review and surveillance points and who sets them
    • The programme impact of inspections and notice periods
    • Why hold points before concealment matter

    What is a method statement?

A document that describes step by step how a task will be carried out, with the resources, sequence, quality checks, safety controls and references. It is submitted for consultant review before the work starts and briefed to the crew.

    What is an ITP?

An inspection and test plan lists every inspection and test for a system, the acceptance criteria, the reference documents, the records produced and the intervention level of each party (contractor, consultant, client or authority).

What is the difference between a hold point and a witness point?

At a hold point work must stop until the named party has inspected and released it. At a witness point the party is notified and may attend; if they do not attend after the notice period, work can continue.

What should a reviewer check in a method statement?

That it references current standards and the approved drawings and submittals, describes a safe and correct sequence, states test methods and acceptance criteria that match the specification, names competent people and calibrated equipment, and includes the risk assessment, permits and emergency arrangements.
