DEWA and BS 7671 inform the project design review. The values below are user entered criteria, not a formal authority or standards compliance certificate. PENDING means evidence or a measured value is missing.
Engineer’s Notes | Site practice
Power cable spacing: Review thermal grouping and manufacturer instructions. The 1D gap is an editable project target, not an asserted universal DEWA minimum.
Soffit access: Check pulling, supports, covers and maintenance access. 250 mm is the initial project target here, subject to drawings and site constraints.
Power and data segregation: Assess EMC route, barriers, cable type and project specification. 300 mm is a starting criterion, not a universal BS EN 50174-2 value.
Tray or ladder: Choose by cable mass, span, support conditions, ventilation and manufacturer load data. A cable size alone does not determine containment type.
Installation method statement · field template
Scope: HD G.I. cable tray routes, proprietary fittings, supports, bonding and cable loading. Prerequisites: approved coordinated drawings, material submittal, safe work permit, access equipment and structural fixing approval. Responsible persons: site engineer sets out, supervisor controls installation, QA/QC engineer checks hold points, consultant witnesses the agreed ITP stages.
- Document approval: coordinated shop drawings, approved tray and accessory submittals, product catalogue, SWL/span table, cable schedule and risk assessment.
- Set out routes and levels; coordinate with structure, fire compartments, HVAC, plumbing and maintenance clearances before drilling.
- Inspect delivery for HD G.I. finish, UV protection documentation, side height, return flange ≥9 mm, burr-free edges and matching proprietary fittings.
- Mark support positions using the approved span schedule and additional supports near bends, tees, risers and equipment. Confirm anchors and slab capacity with structural design.
- Fix supports and install straight runs, factory radiused bends and tees; reject sharp-edge or site-fabricated accessories. Protect any approved cut edge per manufacturer procedure.
- Bond tray sections, install expansion arrangements, fire stopping and segregation as approved. Lay cables within bend-radius, pulling and loading limits.
- Inspect, photograph, rectify and record as-built routes before concealment. Obtain required inspection releases.
Safety: isolate adjacent live services; verify drilling zones; use approved access equipment and PPE; control sharp edges, dropped materials and manual lifting. Stop work for conflicts or undocumented anchors.
Quality manual / ITP · hold points and records
Control: use the current approved drawing revision and traceable product batch. The QA/QC engineer records inspections, raises nonconformances for deviations, verifies corrective action, and retains approvals, test records, photographs and as-built drawings for handover. Hold points require the agreed consultant release before covering the work.
| Stage | Acceptance evidence | Record / release |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-installation | Approved drawings, method statement, material submittal and load calculations | Consultant acceptance before works |
| Material receipt | HD G.I., UV suitability, ≥50 mm sides, ≥9 mm return, proprietary radius fittings | Delivery inspection / certificates |
| Supports | Span-specific SWL, route load, fixing/anchor design and seismic design if applicable | Setting out inspection / anchor records |
| Installation | No fabricated/sharp fittings; bonding, safe cut edges, pulling clearances | Progressive inspection and photos |
| Closeout | Continuity and inspection records; fire stop, cable schedule, as-builts and O&M | Final acceptance / snag closure |
Inspection and commissioning handover
- Verify tray make, gauge, finish, edge protection and approved shop drawings.
- Record bracket spacing, fixings, support load rating and manufacturer span-specific SWL.
- Check bonding continuity and earthing design, including joints and expansion sections.
- Check separation, service access, fire stopping and penetration details in the field.
- Confirm cable datasheets, bend radii, cleats, pulling method and thermal grouping calculation.
- Photograph as-built routing and record inspection and test results.
