FC & Shop Drawings Lab

The FC drawing tells you what the designer wants. The shop drawing shows how the contractor will build it, with real sizes, levels and products. Learn to read both, catch the faults in a shop drawing before they are built, and make sure nobody on site works from a superseded print.

The drawings on an MEP project

Drawings move through stages. Each one has a different author, purpose and approval. Click a stage to see what it contains and what you can and cannot do with it on site.

FC drawing vs shop drawing at a glance

Site rule of thumb: you install from approved shop drawings (status A or B), checked against the latest FC revision. If they disagree, raise an . Never pick the one you prefer.

Title block decoder and drawing numbers

The title block tells you if a drawing is current, who issued it, what it is for and whether you can build from it. Click each field.

Spot the difference: FC layout vs shop drawing

The contractor has submitted a shop drawing for a Level 3 corridor and store. Compare it with the FC drawing and click each place where the shop drawing differs. Then decide: is it a fault to reject, a comment, or an acceptable improvement?

Revisions on site: which prints are valid?

These prints are pinned up in the site office. Check each one against the current and decide: valid for construction, superseded or not for construction.

Score

A print is valid only if it is the current revision and its status allows construction.

Shop drawing review checklist

Pick the discipline, then go through the checks as a reviewer. Mark each item OK, Comment or N/A and add your comment. The lab recommends a status code and builds a comment sheet you can print.

3D ceiling void: FC, shop and as-built layers

The same corridor ceiling void as drawn on the FC drawing (single-line, no levels), the coordinated shop drawing and the as-built record. Switch layers to see why shop drawings exist. Then play the 4D lifecycle.

About this lab: FC & Shop Drawings Lab

FC Drawings vs Shop Drawings for MEP Site Engineers

This free lab explains the drawings that move through an MEP project: tender, For Construction (FC/IFC), shop drawings, combined services and builder's work drawings, and as-built records. It is built for graduates and site engineers who need to read a title block, check a revision, and review a contractor's shop drawing against the design.

What the lab covers

  • Drawing types, who prepares them and who approves them
  • Title block fields, ISO 19650 style drawing numbers, revision and suitability codes
  • A practical spot-the-difference review with common shop drawing faults
  • Superseded drawings and the site drawing register
  • Discipline checklists for electrical, ELV and fire alarm, HVAC, plumbing and fire fighting

What is the difference between FC and shop drawings?

For Construction (FC or IFC) drawings are issued by the designer and show the design intent: what is required and where. Shop drawings are prepared by the contractor from the FC set and show how it will be built, with selected products, real sizes, fixing details, levels and coordination with other services. The consultant reviews the shop drawings before installation.

What do review codes A, B, C and D mean?

A common scheme: A approved, proceed. B approved as noted, proceed and incorporate the comments. C revise and resubmit, do not proceed with the affected work. D rejected. Projects define their own codes in the specification, so check the contract.

What is a combined services drawing?

A coordination drawing that overlays all MEP services in a congested area (ceiling voids, risers, plant rooms) with levels and sections, so that clashes between ducts, pipes, cable trays and structure are solved before installation.

Why remove superseded drawings from site?

Building from an old revision is one of the most expensive site mistakes. Superseded prints must be withdrawn or stamped SUPERSEDED, and the site set checked against the latest drawing register.
