Data Center Power Lab

Build a data center supply, break it, and see what level of resilience it really reaches. Then size the UPS, batteries and generators, and follow every kilowatt to the PUE.

Engineer's notes

The weakest system sets the level

It is common to see 2N UPS spec'd next to a single chilled water header, or a single fuel day tank feeding every generator. Check cooling, fuel, controls and the paths between them with the same care as the UPS, or the money spent on 2N buys nothing.

Single-corded loads are the quiet risk

Network gear, older storage and some security kit still arrive with one power supply. Count them early, and plan rack transfer switches or an STS. Otherwise they sit on one side of a 2N system and fail with it.

Cooling is the clock after a power cut

The UPS and generators win the first ten seconds. The chillers lose the next few minutes. Put fans and pumps on UPS, size the thermal storage for the real restart time from the chiller supplier, and test it with a pull-the-plug test before handover.

Design for day one, not just day ten

A hall sized for 2 MW may run at 300 kW for its first year. Modular UPS, staged generators and part-load efficiency matter more than the nameplate. Ask the client for a load ramp, not just a final number.

Topics: Uptime Tiers, TIA-942 ratings, EN 50600 classes, N, N+1, 2N, 2N+1 and distributed redundant UPS, STS, concurrent maintainability, fault tolerance, rack density, busway sizing, UPS efficiency, battery autonomy and life, DCC generator rating, ISO 8528-5 block loading, PUE, thermal storage.
