Distribution Transformer Lab

See inside oil and cast resin transformers in 3D, watch vector groups rotate, check parallel operation, size a transformer with its losses and LV fault level, and run a full day of thermal loading.

In short

  • A distribution transformer steps MV (for example 11 kV) down to LV (400/230 V). The usual sizes are 500 to 2500 kVA for buildings.
  • Dyn11 is the standard vector group: delta HV, star LV with neutral, and LV leading HV by 30°.
  • Full-load current: I = S / (√3 × V). A 1000 kVA unit draws 52.5 A at 11 kV and 1443 A at 400 V.
  • IEC 60076-5 minimum impedance is 4% up to 630 kVA, 5% to 1250 kVA and 6.25% to 2500 kVA. That impedance sets the LV fault level.
  • IEC temperature rise limits assume 40 °C max ambient. Hotter sites such as the GCC need a reduced rise or derating.

4D Thermal Day (IEC 60076-7) 3D 4D

Run 24 hours of load and ambient temperature through an oil-immersed ONAN transformer. The 3D model changes colour with temperature, the chart tracks top-oil and hot-spot temperatures, and the ageing counter shows how fast the paper insulation is wearing.

Colour: blue = cool, red = hot. X-ray shows the windings.

Model: IEC 60076-7 difference equations with the ONAN distribution transformer values (x = 0.8, y = 1.6, k11 = 1, k21 = 1, k22 = 2, τo = 180 min, τw = 4 min, Δθor = 55 K, Hg = 23 K, R = 5). Ageing uses V = 2^((θh − 98)/6) for non-thermally upgraded paper. The day is run three times first so the temperatures start from a steady cycle.

How does a distribution transformer work?

The HV winding and the LV winding sit on the same laminated steel core. Alternating current in the HV winding creates an alternating magnetic flux in the core, and that flux induces a voltage in the LV winding. The voltage ratio equals the turns ratio. For an 11 kV to 400 V Dyn11 unit, each HV delta winding sees 11,000 V and each LV star winding sees 231 V.

PractitionerThe LV winding usually sits next to the core and the HV winding outside it, because the LV needs less insulation to the earthed core. Off-circuit taps (typically ±2 × 2.5%) are on the HV winding, where the current is lower.

What does a vector group mean?

The capital letter is the HV connection (D delta, Y star), the small letter is the LV connection (d, y, or z for zigzag), n means the neutral is brought out, and the number is the phase shift in 30° steps, read like a clock. HV phase A is at 12 o'clock. In Dyn11 the LV phase a points to 11 o'clock, so LV leads HV by 30°. Transformers can only run in parallel if they have the same clock number.

How do you size a transformer?

  1. Work out the maximum demand: connected load × diversity, divided by power factor to get kVA.
  2. Add future growth and choose a maximum planned loading, often 75 to 80% in hot climates.
  3. Pick the next standard size, then check the LV fault level against the LV switchgear rating.
  4. Check the ambient: in the GCC, specify for the real site ambient and the substation ventilation.
  5. Compare losses over the life of the unit. Paying more for lower losses usually pays back.

ExpertThe LV fault current is roughly Isc = In / (uk + Sn/Ssource). A 2500 kVA, 6.25% unit at 400 V gives about 53 to 58 kA depending on the MV source, which drives up the LV switchgear cost. Two smaller transformers on separate LV boards can keep fault levels down.

Why does hot-spot temperature matter?

Paper insulation ages faster as it gets hotter. Under IEC 60076-7, ageing doubles for every 6 K above 98 °C at the hottest spot in the winding. A transformer that runs its hot spot at 110 °C all day ages about four times faster than normal. That is why GCC substations need good ventilation and why peak summer loads matter more than the annual average.

Regional notes

GCC

Dyn11, 11 kV/400 V is standard, with sizes such as 1000 and 1500 kVA common in utility substations. Design for ambient up to 50 °C with reduced temperature rise, use only utility-approved makes, and give cast resin units good room ventilation.

Saudi Arabia

60 Hz, with 13.8 kV and 33 kV primaries. Check SEC specifications for the LV voltage and approved designs.

Australia and New Zealand

Distribution transformers must meet the MEPS in AS 2374.1.2 (GEMS in Australia, EECA rules in New Zealand). Pad-mount units are common, often 11 kV or 22 kV to 433/250 V on no-load tap.

Asia

Follow the utility specification (TNB, SP Group, Indian DISCOMs). India also has BEE star-rated loss levels for distribution transformers.

Frequently asked questions

What does Dyn11 mean?
D means the HV winding is delta connected, y means the LV winding is star connected, n means the LV neutral is brought out, and 11 means the LV voltage leads the HV voltage by 30 degrees, shown as 11 o'clock on a clock face. Dyn11 is the most common vector group for 11 kV/400 V distribution transformers.
What are the conditions for running transformers in parallel?
Transformers in parallel need the same phase shift (vector group clock number), the same voltage ratio on the tap in use (within about 0.5%), similar per-unit impedance (within about 10%), and the same phase sequence. A kVA ratio of no more than about 2:1 is also good practice. Different phase shifts cause a large circulating current, close to a short circuit.
What is the minimum impedance of a distribution transformer?
IEC 60076-5 gives minimum short-circuit impedances of 4.0% up to 630 kVA, 5.0% from 631 to 1250 kVA, 6.25% from 1251 to 2500 kVA and 7.15% from 2501 to 6300 kVA.
At what load is a transformer most efficient?
Maximum efficiency happens when load losses equal no-load losses, at a per-unit load of the square root of no-load loss divided by full-load copper loss. For typical distribution transformers this is around 30 to 50% load.
How does ambient temperature affect transformer rating?
IEC 60076-2 temperature rise limits assume a maximum ambient of 40 °C, a monthly average of 30 °C and a yearly average of 20 °C. Where the site is hotter, the allowed temperature rise is reduced by the excess, so in the GCC transformers are usually specified for the higher ambient or derated.
